Since the discovery of rich mineral deposits in 1875, Broken Hill has been one of the world’s great mining centres for silver, lead and zinc ore. It tolerated an environmental disaster as the desert threatened the town until 1953 when a 100km pipeline connected Broken Hill to the Darling River at Menindee. The city of Broken Hill has flourished due to the hardships encountered by many of the residents and this in turn has created a unique and proud spirit that binds the community like few others in Australia.
